In the case of jIva, the same three are the waking
state (where we do the maintenanace function of carrying on the activities of
life), the dream state (wherein we, out of our own mind, create endless
varieties) and the deep sleep state (wherein all is quiet and is dissolved).
But even in that deep sleep state, there is a life within, which is unaffected
by any of the three; that is the turIyaM, familiarly called ‘caturthaM’ (the fourth) in Mandukya Upanishad.
